Canadian firms team up for heavy water production

Canadian Nuclear Laboratories, Atomic Energy of Canada Limited and AtkinsRéalis have signed a memorandum of understanding to explore opportunities to collaborate on the production of heavy water for use in new Candu reactors in Canada.

Would-be producers making the most of the uranium market

NexGen Energy Ltd has said its newly announced strategic purchase of 2.7 million pounds U3O8 (1039 tU), together with a recent share placement, "will significantly assist the company in funding the anticipated capital needs to develop the Rook I Project" in Canada. Denison Mines Corp intends to use its physical uranium investment to support future project financing efforts for Phoenix - and has just sold 100,000 pounds U3O8 from its physical uranium holdings at more than three times the price it paid for it.

A trilateral collaboration agreement has been signed to further cooperation between Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power, ARC Clean Technology and New Brunswick Power with the goal of establishing teaming agreements for global small modular reactor fleet deployment. It follows the signing of a memorandum of understanding last November.

South Bruce signs hosting agreement with NWMO

The agreement between the municipality of South Bruce and Canada's Nuclear Waste Management Organization was signed following a vote by the municipality's council on 1 May. The area is one of two potential host sites for a deep geologic repository selected in a process launched by the organisation in 2010.

CEO Tim Gitzel said the Canadian nuclear fuel company's results for the first quarter of 2024 - with losses of CAD7 million (USD5 million) - were driven by normal quarterly variations, coupled with costs related to its acquisition last year of Westinghouse.

Ten-yearly overhaul begins at Bruce B vacuum building

Work has started on a three-week, CAD190 million (USD138 million) overhaul of a crucial part of the safety systems at Bruce B in Canada. Inspections and maintenance to the vacuum building must be carried out once every decade, but can only take place when all four of the plant's operating units are offline.

BWXT announces expansion of Ontario manufacturing plant

BWXT Technologies is investing a total of CAD80 million in its Cambridge manufacturing plant to support small modular reactors, traditional large-scale nuclear and advanced reactors, in Canada and around the world. The plant is the largest commercial nuclear equipment manufacturing facility in North America.
