Areva celebrated today the emplacement of the reactor pressure vessel for the third power unit at Olkiluoto nuclear power plant. It should generate 1600 MWe from early 2013 for plant owner Teollisuuden Voima Oyj.

Measuring 5.3 meters in diameter and 10.6 meters in height, the 420 tonne component was installed using two cranes: the permanent polar crane in the ceiling of the reactor building as well as a large movable unit.

Areva said this milestone will "kick off a flurry of installation activities for heavy nuclear components coinciding with the installation and start-up of electro-mechanical systems."
