US, Spanish regulators renew cooperation

The nuclear regulators of the USA and Spain have renewed a bilateral agreement, originally signed in 1979, on cooperation. Meanwhile, a new director has been appointed to head the Spanish regulator.

Fernando Marti Scharfhausen, president of Spain's Nuclear Safety Council (Consejo de Seguridad Nuclear, CSN) and Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) chairman Stephen Burns signed the renewed agreement in Washington yesterday.
The agreement - which covers the exchange of technical information, cooperation and collaboration in research projects, as well as training and temporary staff assignments between the CSN and NRC - is renewed every five years.
In a statement, CSN said, "This meeting highlighted the good relations that both agencies have had for years, the mutual interest in further strengthening international cooperation, the exchange of lessons learned and good practices in nuclear safety."
New CSN director
Spain's Council of Ministers approved the appointment of Javier Dies as the new director of the CSN on 17 October.
The CSN's new director is professor of nuclear engineering at the Polytechnic University of Catalonia and has participated in numerous International Atomic Energy Agency missions.
