KHNP to support Canadian decommissioning projects

Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP) has signed a contract with Canadian nuclear engineering firm Kinectrics to provide decommissioning engineering support, building on a memorandum of understanding on the dismantling of nuclear power plants they signed in August 2019. The contract will see Korean nuclear power plant decommissioning personnel dispatched overseas for the first time.

In a 7 April statement, KHNP said Kinectrics highly appreciated the technology KHNP used to replace the pressure tubes and improve the facilities of unit 1 of the Wolsong plant in South Korea.
Under the contract, Kinectrics will hire five KHNP experts in the dismantling of nuclear power plants for one year to carry out the management of decommissioning waste and the development of process projects for the dismantling of pressurised heavy water (Candu) reactors at the Bruce, Darlington and Pickering nuclear power plants.
KHNP said it expects its agreement with Kinectrics to strengthen their experience in decommissioning heavy water reactors and allow them to enter the global decommissioning market jointly.
