Middle East nuclear power to quadruple in ten years

Nuclear electricity generation capacity in the Middle East is expected to increase from 3.6 gigawatts this year to 14.1 GWe by 2028 thanks to new construction start-ups and recent agreements between Middle Eastern countries and nuclear vendors, the US Energy Information Administration said yesterday. The United Arab Emirates will lead near-term growth by installing 5.4 GWe of nuclear capacity by 2020, it said.

Rolls-Royce has signed a memorandum of understanding with state-owned Jordan Atomic Energy Commission to conduct a technical feasibility study for the construction of a Rolls-Royce small modular reactor in the Middle Eastern country. The signing took place at the British Embassy in Paris between Alan Woods, strategy and business development director at Rolls-Royce, and Kamal Araj, JAEC vice chairman.
