EdF buy Chinese carbon credits
Wednesday, 13 June 2007
Electricite de France (EdF) has signed an agreement with China Guangdong Nuclear Power Holding Co to purchase carbon credits arising from a 400,000 kW wind turbine facility. EdF will purchase credits for 3.6 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent emissions, according to reports by AFX. If the carbon credits are issued through the Kyoto Protocol Clean Development Mechanism, EdF would have the option of using the credits to meet their obligations within the European Emissions Trading Scheme. EdF operates 58 nuclear reactors in France and generates around 9% of its power from fossil fuels. In 2006 the EdF Group in Europe emitted around 65 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent.
