Kairos Power receives pressure vessel certification

Kairos Power has received ASME certification to produce U-stamped pressure vessels at the company's manufacturing facility in Albuquerque, New Mexico - a significant step towards achieving the N stamp certification required to manufacture nuclear-grade components.

Kairos, the developer of a fluoride salt-cooled high-temperature reactor known as KP-FHR, said it is now one of only 17 U-stamp holders and the only U2-stamp holder in the state of New Mexico.

"With this certification, Kairos Power can now self-manufacture ASME BPVC Section VIII Division 1 and Division 2 vessels for our testing and development programmes," the company said. It intends to build a variety of vessels and several iterations of large, tight-tolerance vessels including the one for the Hermes demonstration reactor which is to be built in Oak Ridge, Tennessee.

"Manufacturing vessels in-house allows us to better control quality and schedule to deliver a product that meets exacting specifications while making rapid progress in our hardware iterations," the company said.

"The U stamp certification is a significant step on our path toward achieving N-stamp certification to manufacture nuclear-grade components and ultimately delivering cost certainty for KP-FHR technology."
