NOK takes on Axpo branding

Monday, 5 October 2009

The name of Swiss utility Nordostschweizerische Kraftwerk (NOK) has been changed to NOK Axpo in line with its membership of the Axpo Group. In a statement, Axpo said that the aim of the name change is 'to strengthen the Axpo brand and more consistently focus on the future challenges of the market.' The company added, 'The creation of a single, strong brand for production, distribution, trading and marketing improves the competitive position of the entire Axpo group in Switzerland.' NOK operates the two-unit Beznau nuclear power plant. The two 365 MWe Westinghouse pressurised water reactors (PWRs) are the longest-serving power reactors in the country. Unit 1 began operating in 1969, while unit 2 entered operation in 1972. In addition to providing power, both units also produce district heating. Their operating life is expected to run until 2020. An application has already been submitted to the Swiss Federal Office of Energy for preliminary approval to construct a replacement unit at Beznau, with a capacity of 1600 MWe.
