A new study shows that Scotland's GBP25 billion (USD33 billion) nuclear decommissioning programme could deliver significant long-term economic and social benefits at both national and local levels over the next 90 years and beyond.

Spain's nuclear regulator has approved an expansion of the on-site interim dry storage facility for used fuel at the Garoña nuclear power plant, which shut down in 2012. The expansion is required to accommodate all the fuel storage needs of the plant during its decommissioning.

The first container has been filled with long-lived low- and intermediate-level waste from the used fuel pools of unit 3 at Belgium's Doel nuclear power plant, which was shut down in September 2022 and is now being decommissioned.

Work has begun at Italy's Garigliano nuclear power plant to dismantle an old radioactive waste system, used during the plant's operation to manage radioactive liquid effluents. A new system was put into operation in 2022 for the treatment of such waste.

The defueling of the second of two reactors at Hunterston B means the plant has become the first of the UK's seven advanced gas-cooled reactor power plants to be declared free of all used nuclear fuel ahead of decommissioning.

Work has started to demolish and subsequently reconstruct an interim storage facility for low-level radioactive waste at the Caorso nuclear power plant site. The new facility will meet the most recent safety standards required by industry regulations and legislation.

Russia's state nuclear corporation Rosatom says it has created a technology for processing liquid radioactive sodium coolant which will allow decommissioning of fast neutron reactors.

The Norwegian government has issued Norwegian Nuclear Decommissioning with a licence to own and operate the nuclear fuel and materials testing reactor at Halden, which it will decommission. Until now, the reactor has been owned and operated by the Institute of Energy Technology.

German nuclear technology association Kerntechnik Deutschland e.V. says that restarting the country's nuclear power plants "offers a safe, economically viable and climate-friendly alternative to the current energy policy". It says that up to six shut down reactors could technically resume operation.
