Obama's climate plan 'misses opportunity' of existing reactors, says NEI
The Nuclear Energy Institute (NEI) has welcomed the positive changes on new nuclear power plants contained in the final Clean Power Plan rule issued this week by the US Environmental Protection Agency, but said it is a "missed opportunity" on existing reactors.

US Clean Power Plan missed opportunity for nuclear
US president Barack Obama's newly revealed plan to reduce carbon emissions from power plants misses an opportunity by failing to recognize the carbon-abatement value of existing nuclear units, according to the Nuclear Energy Institute (NEI).

Agreement on extending lives of Doel units
An agreement in principle has been reached between Electrabel and the Belgian government on the conditions for a ten-year life extension for units 1 and 2 of the Doel nuclear power plant. The tax to be paid by the country's nuclear operators has also been revised.

West African states prepare MOU on nuclear cooperation
The newly created West African Integrated Nuclear Power Group prepared a draft memorandum of understanding and three-year action plan at its first meeting, held last week in Niamey, Niger. The heads of delegations from Benin, Burkina Faso, Ghana, Mali, Niger, Nigeria and Senegal will take the MOU document to their respective governments for signature, which will commit them to proceeding with the initial planning for a regional nuclear power program.

Armenia confirms ongoing role for nuclear
Armenia's prime minister has confirmed a 10-year life extension of the country's only operating nuclear power plant and that negotiations are being held on the construction of new nuclear capacity.

French energy transition bill adopted
France's National Assembly yesterday gave final approval of the country's energy transition bill. Under the legislation, France's reliance on nuclear energy will be reduced to 50% of power generation by 2025.

Nuclear remains Spain's largest electricity supplier
Spain's seven nuclear power reactors generated 57.3 TWh of electricity in 2014, accounting for one-fifth of the country's electricity, according to figures compiled by trade association Foro Nuclear.
