Grid connection for second Shin Hanul unit
Unit 2 of the Shin Hanul nuclear power plant in South Korea has began supplying its first electricity to the grid, Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power announced. The unit is the second of two APR-1400 reactors at the site, with a further two planned.

'No abnormalities' reported at Japanese nuclear plants following earthquake
Japanese nuclear power plant operators have reported some minor damage, but no public safety issues, following the 7.6 magnitude earthquake which struck Ishikawa Prefecture on Monday.

NRA lifts ban on Kashiwazaki-Kariwa fuel activities
Japan's Nuclear Regulation Authority has decided, at a meeting on 27 December, to lift an administrative order imposed on Tokyo Electric Power Company in 2021 that prohibited the company from moving nuclear fuel or loading it into reactors at the seven-unit Kashiwazaki-Kariwa nuclear power plant.

Regulator accepts Diablo Canyon licence renewal application
Pacific Gas & Electric can operate the two-unit Diablo Canyon nuclear power plant in California beyond the expiry of their current licences (2024 and 2025, respectively) following the acceptance of PG&E's licence renewal application by the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission.

Indian reactor reaches first criticality
The controlled self-sustaining fission chain reaction began at Kakrapar unit 4 in the early hours of 17 December, Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd has announced. The Indian government has also confirmed it has completed the land purchase for the construction of two 700 MWe reactors at Chutka.

Final accord reached on Belgian reactor operations
A final agreement has been signed between the Belgian government and French utility Engie to extend the operation of the Tihange 3 and Doel 4 nuclear power reactors by 10 years and on all obligations related to radioactive waste.

IAEA finds commitment to safety at Russian fast reactor

IAEA says Zaporizhzhia unit 5 switched to cold shutdown
The International Atomic Energy Agency says the fifth unit at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant is switching from hot to cold shutdown to allow investigation of why boron had been detected in a cooling circuit.
