Animals 'likely triggered landmines' at Zaporizhzhia
Three landmine explosions close to Ukraine's Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant this week appear likely to have been set off by animals, the director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency Rafael Mariano Grossi has said. Although there was no major damage, it highlights continuing risks faced by the plant and its workers.

Accord reached on keeping two German reactors in reserve
The German government has reached an agreement with the operators of Isar 2 and Neckarwestheim 2 on keeping the nuclear power plants on standby to supply power over the coming winter if needed.

First Belgian power reactor shut down
Unit 3 of the Doel nuclear power plant was disconnected from the grid at 9.31pm on 23 September, in accordance with Belgium's legislation on the gradual phase-out of nuclear energy. Doel 3 is the first of seven Belgian reactors to be taken out of service over the coming years.

Grossi holds Zaporizhzhia safety zone talks with Ukraine and Russia
International Atomic Energy Agency Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi said that his separate talks with the foreign ministers of Ukraine, Dmytro Kuleba, and of Russia, Sergei Lavrov, indicate there is a "solid basis" for believing that a safety and security zone around the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant can be established.

Third Barakah unit starts up
The 1400 MWe unit is now producing heat from nuclear fission, and will be connected to the UAE's electricity grid in the coming weeks, Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation said. Two units at the site, in the Al Dhafra Region of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, are already in commercial operation.

Shelling near South Ukraine nuclear plant prompts fresh IAEA warning
Shelling which caused an explosion 300 metres from reactors at the South Ukraine nuclear power plant "all too clearly demonstrates the dangers at other nuclear facilities in the country", said International Atomic Energy Agency Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi as he steps up efforts to implement a safety and security zone around the Zaporizhzhia plant.

IAEA board calls for Russia to hand over control of Zaporizhzhia
The board of governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency adopted the resolution, which calls on Russia to "cease all actions against, and at, Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant", in a vote, with 26 in favour, seven abstentions and two voting against.

Oskarshamn 3 completes IAEA review of long-term operation
An International Atomic Energy Agency team of experts has completed a review of long-term operational safety at unit 3 of the Oskarshamn nuclear power plant in southern Sweden. The team assessed the strategy and key elements for the safe long-term operation of the unit based on IAEA safety standards.

IAEA says both sides 'engaging' with Zaporizhzhia safety zone plan
International Atomic Energy Agency Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi says that consultations have begun over establishing a "safety and security zone" at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant and says that despite shelling continuing "I have seen signs that they are interested in this agreement".
