Jordan has made "notable progress" in developing its nuclear infrastructure, a mission led by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has found. The team made several recommendations to the country for developing this further.

The nuclear agencies of Saudi Arabia and Jordan have signed a cooperation agreement that will see the neighbouring countries work together to advance their energy projects.

Russia has been selected as the preferred bidder to supply Jordan with its first nuclear power plant. The initial reactor of the two-unit plant is expected to start operating in 2020.

Jordan's first nuclear power plant will be supplied by either AtomStroyExport of Russia or Areva-Mitsubishi Heavy Industries joint venture Atmea.

Russia has offered Jordan a deal under which it will construct four nuclear power reactors. The proposal - similar to that offered to Turkey - is separate to the tender to supply the country's first power reactor, the winner of which is set to be selected by the end of this month.
