The International Atomic Energy Agency director general says consultations about an agreement for the safety and security of Ukraine's nuclear facilities are on-going.

Ukraine says that the external power supply to Chernobyl has been restored five days after it was lost after power lines to the area were damaged during fighting.

The head of Ukraine’s Energoatom told the International Atomic Energy Agency on Sunday that power could be restored to Chernobyl after workers fixed the damaged power line - but on Monday Ukraine's energy company reported it was damaged again "before the power supply was fully restored".

The director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Rafael Mariano Grossi, held talks in Turkey with Ukraine's foreign minister and Russia's foreign minister and said "we are making progress on the safety and security of nuclear facilities in Ukraine".

The International Energy Agency has set out a ten-point plan that could enable the European Union to reduce its imports of natural gas from Russia by more than one-third within a year, including maximising generation from existing low-emissions sources such as nuclear.

The head of Ukraine's Energoatom has asked the International Atomic Energy Agency to intervene to help keep the area around the plants free from military action.
