DOE expands support for innovation projects
The US Department of Energy's Oak Ridge National Laboratory has announced six new collaborations with industry on projects to advance commercial nuclear energy technologies. Meanwhile, the DOE has announced separate funding solicitations for research into fusion energy and transformative energy technologies.

PRISM selected for US test reactor programme
Idaho National Laboratory has selected GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy's PRISM technology to support the US Department of Energy's Versatile Test Reactor programme. The project is looking at what would be needed to establish a reactor-based fast-spectrum neutron irradiation capability for the USA by 2026.

Channel removal work trialled at Chernobyl
A fuel channel, together with a control and protection system channel, have been removed from the reactor of unit 1 at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in Ukraine. The work was carried out as part of research into developing a plan for dismantling the three undamaged units at the plant.

Canada to build advanced medical isotope centre
Canada is to invest more than CAD50 million (USD38 million) on a new centre for advanced medical isotope research and development. The centre will be on the campus of Triumf, the national laboratory for particle physics, at the University of British Columbia.

GE secures funding for advanced fuel development
The US Department of Energy has awarded a USD33.7 million project to continue the development of advanced fuel rod technologies to GE's Global Research Center. The new fuel, using the IronClad and ARMOR advanced fuel solutions, will be developed in partnership with three US national laboratories.
