In a letter to the Financial Times, Heather Hoff and Kristin Zaitz of Mothers for Nuclear write that nuclear power is the safest way to generate reliable electricity. "Right now, across the US, we are closing perfectly good existing nuclear plants because of low natural gas prices and discriminatory policies that, in the name of climate action, support renewables but not carbon-free nuclear energy," they wrote.

Energoatom has signed a Memorandum of Understanding and Cooperation with the World  Association of Nuclear Operators' Paris Centre for all its future peer reviews, starting in 2022. The Ukrainian nuclear power plant operator is currently a member of WANO’s Moscow Centre.

The world must learn to value nuclear energy for its energy security and reliability attributes, but most of all for its contribution to reducing carbon emissions before it is too late, the International Energy Agency's Fatih Birol has told a US-EU high-level forum.
 

Global efforts to tackle climate change are futile as long as opposition to nuclear power persists, delegates heard at the opening session of the International Atomic Energy Agency's International Conference on Climate Change and the Role of Nuclear Power. It is the Vienna-based agency's first conference on this topic.

The power sector supports the European Commission's goal of net-zero greenhouse gas emissions in the EU economy by 2050, the association of European electricity generators, Eurelectric, said. However, it has called for six "critical enablers" to be put in place to achieve this.

The European Commission must acknowledge the "critical role" that nuclear energy has to play under its sustainable finance initiative, European nuclear trade body Foratom said yesterday. The Commission, it said, should reconsider its decision to exclude nuclear from economic activities covered by the initiative.

Experts from the Moscow Centre of the World Association of Nuclear Operators have completed a technical support mission at unit 2 of the Leningrad Phase II nuclear power plant under construction in northwest Russia.

The International Energy Agency has made policy recommendations for the many countries that see a role for nuclear power in their energy transitions in a new report it plans to discuss today at the 10th Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM10) being held this week in Vancouver, Canada.

"Energy investments now face unprecedented uncertainties, with shifts in markets, policies and technologies," Fatih Birol, the executive director of the International Energy Agency says in the Paris-based organisation's latest annual review.
