International Atomic Energy Agency Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi has outlined to the UN Security Council five principles - "the bare minimum" - to help protect Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant.

International Atomic Energy Agency Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi says agreement on protecting the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant is needed urgently, saying "this situation cannot continue" after its link to external power supplies was lost for most of the morning on Monday and it was forced to rely on emergency diesel generators for a seventh occasion.

The evacuation of people from the town of Energodar, where many of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant's staff and their families live, is being closely monitored by the International Atomic Energy Agency, with its director general warning the situation in the area was "increasingly unpredictable".

Up to 20 Holtec SMR-160 plants will be built in Ukraine under a cooperation agreement signed between Holtec International and Ukrainian national nuclear operator Energoatom. The agreement calls for the first plant to begin supplying power by March 2029.

The current situation at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant is having a significant impact on the plant's maintenance capability, the International Atomic Energy Agency said.

Russia will switch the occupied Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant back from US-made nuclear fuel as soon as possible, according to reported comments from Renat Karchaa, an adviser to Rosenergoatom's CEO. It follows a CNN report that the US Department of Energy had sent a letter saying that the occupied plant in Ukraine "contains US-origin nuclear technical data that is export-controlled by the United States Government".

Cameco and Energoatom have signed the last agreement needed for the implementation of a programme to export all of Ukraine's uranium production for processing in Canada to produce fuel for Ukrainian nuclear power plants.

The International Atomic Energy Agency director general says that the plan for a safety and security zone around the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant "is evolving" to focus on the plant itself and the principle that a nuclear power plant should not be attacked or be used to attack from.

The six-unit plant is on the frontline of the conflict and Grossi has spent months seeking to get agreement on a safety and security zone around it.
