Chinese regulatory system must keep up with growth, says IAEA
China's regulatory framework for nuclear and radiation safety is effective but will need to keep pace with the country's nuclear energy program, an International Atomic Energy Agency peer review mission has concluded.

Fuqing 3 starts supplying electricity to grid
The third unit of the Fuqing nuclear power plant in China's Fujian province has been connected to the grid. The CPR-1000 is scheduled to enter commercial operation later this year.

Ikata 3 back in commercial operation
Unit 3 of the Ikata nuclear power plant in Japan's Ehime prefecture has resumed commercial operation, Shikoku Electric Power Company announced today. Only two other Japanese reactors are currently in commercial operation.

Sellafield refutes safety concerns raised in BBC documentary
The owner and operator of the UK's Sellafield complex, together with the country's nuclear regulator, have dismissed safety concerns raised in a BBC documentary investigating "the shocking state of Britain's most hazardous nuclear site".

Kyushu rejects call for suspension of Sendai units
Kyushu Electric Power Company has rejected a request from the governor of Japan's Kagoshima prefecture that operation of units 1 and 2 of the Sendai nuclear power plant be suspended immediately for safety checks. The company said it will continue operating the units until they enter routine scheduled outages later this year.

New steam generators delivered to Embalse ahead of overhaul
The second pair of replacement steam generators has been delivered to the Embalse nuclear power plant in Argentina. The components will be replaced as part of a project to extend the operating period of the Candu pressurized heavy-water reactor by up to 30 years.

OPG ready to go with Darlington refurbishment
After six years of planning and preparations Ontario Power Generation (OPG) says it is "ready to execute" refurbishment of the Darlington nuclear power plant and remains within the CAD 12.8 billion ($9 billion) estimate for the project, which is to start next month.

Second Kudankulam unit connected to grid
Unit 2 of the Kudankulam nuclear power plant in India's southern state of Tamil Nadu has been connected to the electricity grid. It becomes India's 22nd operating power reactor.

Kagoshima governor requests Sendai suspension
The recently-elected governor of Japan's Kagoshima prefecture has today requested Kyushu Electric Power Company temporarily suspends operation of units 1 and 2 of its Sendai nuclear power plant. Only one other power reactor is currently in operation in the country.

CGN sees continued growth in first half of 2016
CGN Power Company Limited - China's largest nuclear power plant operator - announced a 36.3% increase in revenue in the first six months of 2016 to CNY13.1 billion ($2.0 billion), compared with the same period last year.

Uranium separation resumes at Savannah River Site
A facility for separating uranium from used research reactor fuel at the US Department of Energy's Savannah River Site in South Carolina has restarted for the first time in five years. The extracted uranium will be used in new fuel for nuclear power plants.

Ikata 3 operating at full power again
Unit 3 of the Ikata nuclear power plant in Japan's Ehime prefecture has reached 100% operating capacity, owner Shikoku Electric Power Company announced today. The unit is the fifth Japanese reactor to resume operation.
