Australia ships uranium to Taiwan via USA

[Australian Associated Press, 18 December] The first shipment of uranium from Australia to Taiwan, via the USA, is reportedly in progress. The shipment employs an indirect sale arrangement through the US, which will first convert and enrich the ore under a bilateral agreement between Canberra and Washington. BHP Billiton refused to confirm the timing of the shipment. However, Taipower's Sydney-based executive Samson Lee said, "We like to diversify our fuel sources, so this first shipment from Australia is appreciated." Mr Lee confirmed the uranium would "only be for peaceful power generation."
