Australian uranium production down 2% in 2008

Production in 2008 from Australia's three uranium mines totalled 9941 tonnes U3O8 (8430 tU), 2% lower than the 10,145 tonnes U3O8 (8603 tU) produced in 2007. Energy Resources Australia (ERA) reported that output at its Ranger mine in Northern Territory was 5339 tonnes U3O8 (4527 tU), compared with production of 5412 tonnes U3O8 (4589 tU) in 2007. Uranium production at BHP Billiton's Olympic Dam operation in South Australia in 2008 totalled 3943 tonnes U3O8 (3978 t UOC, 3344 tU), up from output of 3985 tonnes U3O8 (3379 tU) in 2007. Meanwhile, Heathgate's Beverley in-situ leach (ISL) mine, also in South Australia, produced 659 tonnes U3O8 (559 tU) in 2008, down from the 748 tonnes U3O8 (634 tU) in 2007.
