A contract worth some $96.5 million for the electrical systems for four new nuclear reactors under construction in India has been awarded to BGR Energy Systems.

Under the turnkey implementation contract from Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd (NPCIL), BGR will supply, install, test and commission the main plant electrical systems - including the nuclear island electricals - for units 7 and 8 of the Rajasthan plant and units 3 and 4 of the Kakrapar plant in Gujarat state. All four units are indigenously designed 700 MWe pressurized heavy-water reactors (PHWRs).

Chennai-based BGR expects the two projects to be completed between September 2015 and March 2016.

V Balakrishnan, president and CEO of BGR's electrical projects division, commented: "This happens to be the single biggest order for main plant electricals received by BGR Energy so far."

It is not the first contract that NPCIL has awarded to BGR. In July 2010, the company was awarded work to design, engineer, manufacture and supply cabling and other electrical work for the nuclear island of the 500 MWe Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor (PFBR), under construction at Kalpakkam. That contract followed two previous ones for the medium-voltage switchgear package and motor control centres for the PFBR.
