Canadian, Korean organizations agree to cooperate
A memorandum of understanding (MoU) on reactor development has been signed between the Organization of Canadian Nuclear Industries (OCI) and the Korean Atomic Industrial Forum (KAIF).
The MoU - signed by OCI president Ron Oberth and KAIF executive vice chairman Kye-Hong Min on 26 August in Vancouver - outlines several ways that OCI and KAIF will work together. These include identifying opportunities at nuclear projects in Korea, Canada and elsewhere on which members of the two organizations can cooperate.
It supports and promotes innovation and cooperation associated with joint development, design, testing, licensing and construction of pressurized heavy water reactors (PHWRs), pressurized water reactors (PWRs) and small modular reactors (SMRs) in Korea, Canada and other countries. OCI said that the two organizations will hold seminars in Korea and Canada "to exchange information leading to enhanced collaboration and possibly the creation of joint ventures among OCI and KAIF companies." The MoU also aims to encourage and facilitate cooperation among Canadian and Korean nuclear research institutes and universities on nuclear research, development and nuclear education.
OCI is an association of 180 Canadian suppliers to the nuclear industry in Canada and foreign markets. KAIF has a membership of more than 100 Korean companies in nuclear power engineering and design, equipment manufacturing, construction, commissioning, operation and maintenance, R&D and other services.
Canada and South Korea signed a nuclear cooperation agreement in 1976.
