Certification renewal under way for GEH ABWR

The US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) has formally accepted GE-Hitachi Nuclear Energy's (GEH's) application to renew the design certification for its Advanced Boiling Water Reactor (ABWR), meaning the review procedure can now formally begin. The NRC approved the ABWR design in 1997, and the current certification is due to expire in June 2012. GEH is seeking a further 15 years of certification, and has submitted an application which includes what the company describes as "important" updates including the current NRC requirement for an aircraft-impact assessment. The original ABWR design was co-developed by Toshiba and GE, with Hitachi, and four are in operation in Japan while more are under construction in Japan and Taiwan. Both Toshiba and GEH have the right to build ABWRs. Toshiba submitted an application to renew the certification for its version of the design in November 2010.
