Environmental Study for two proposed US reactors

[Associated Press, 21 November] US: Dominion has been granted conditional approval to pursue new nuclear power reactors at its North Anna site by the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ). The DEQ has stated that if the company receives an Early Site Permit (ESP) from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), Dominion will be required to conduct an environmental impact study on the effects of new reactors on aquatic life and water levels in Lake Ann and downstream waters. It will also be required to obtain the same permits and regulatory approvals as would be needed by the state's coastal program. The NRC is expected to decide whether to grant Dominion an ESP for North Anna in late 2007.
