Front-end contract for Transnuclear
Areva subsidiary Transnuclear has been awarded a contract by Urenco USA to transport uranium hexafluoride (UF6) from Converdyn's Metropolis conversion plant in Illinois - the only conversion plant in the USA - to its new enrichment facility in Eunice, New Mexico. Transnuclear said that a Urenco audit team concluded in September that the company has an effective and well-maintained management system for the transportation of UF6 materials. In June, the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) authorised the Eunice plant to begin accepting operational delivery of UF6 feed stock. The authorisation allowed Urenco to begin commercial operations enriching uranium for use as nuclear fuel. The plant will be the first commercial centrifuge enrichment plant to become operational in the USA. It will have a capacity of 5.7 million SWU.
