GEH wins $70 million contract to service Browns Ferry
The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) has awarded GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy (GEH) a contract worth more than $70 million to provide outage services for units 1, 2 and 3 of the Browns Ferry nuclear power plant. According to the agreement, GEH will provide "a full portfolio" of outage and inspection services, including refuel floor, under-vessel activities and control rod drive mechanism exchange services for the reactors near Decatur, Alabama.

"We look forward to providing engineering and technical services expertise, advanced tooling and skilled, experienced outage personnel to help TVA meet its goals for the safe and reliable operation of the Browns Ferry reactors," said Lance Hall, executive vice president for nuclear fuels and services at GEH, said in the company statement issued yesterday.
The agreement runs through 2020 and includes a total of nine outages - three at each of the GE boiling water reactors. At a combined 3300 MWe, the units account for 10% of TVA's total generation capacity - enough clean-air electricity to meet the needs of more than two million homes, Wilmington, North Carolina-based GEH said.
TVA provides electricity for business customers and local power distributors serving nine million people in parts of seven Southeastern states of the USA. It receives no taxpayer funding and derives almost all of its revenues from sales of electricity.
