Group to study European nuclear safety

The European Commission (EC) has announcedplans to establish a high level group on nuclear safety and radioactivewaste management. The group will develop a common understanding andreinforce common approaches in the safety of nuclear installations. Thehigh level of representation expected from countries that operate orpossess nuclear installations, as well as countries that have chosennot to use this form of energy, should facilitate Europe-widecooperation and increase confidence in the levels of safety in Europeannuclear facilities, the EC said. "The aim of the group is to swiftlyidentify relevant safety issues, ensure coherent action by the MemberStates authorities and make recommendations on whether any course ofaction should be taken at EU level - I am confident this will reinforcethe safety of Europe's nuclear installations," said Energy CommissionerAndris Piebalgs. The group will regularly report to the EuropeanParliament on its agreed approaches and recommendations, as well asmaking public any decisions made via a dedicated website. The firstmeeting of the group is expected to take place after the summer break.
