Utah-based Energy Solutions has signed a contract with China Power Investment Corp (CPI) to supply a waste management system for several AP1000 units to be constructed at Haiyang, Shandong province.

A ceremony was held in Beijing on 30 July to mark the signing of the contract for the Haiyang Site Radioactive Treatment facility (SRTF). The contract was signed by Shandong Nuclear Power Co (SDNPC) and Yuanda Environmental Engineering Co (both subsidiaries of CPI) and Energy Solutions.

Under the contract, a consortium between Energy Solutions and Yuanda Environmental Engineering will design, equip and commission the SRTF for the treatment of liquid, wet solid and solid wastes from the Haiyang plant.

Energy Solutions is to develop the conceptual design for the SRTF and supply all the key processing technology and equipment. The company will also work with SDNPC to ensure that the SRTF is commissioned and brought online to the agreed cost and schedule.

In a statement, CPI said: "The availability of the SRTF is a prerequisite for Haiyang 1 to obtain the fuel loading permit." It added, "Signing of the SRTF contract is another important milestone for Haiyang this year, laying a solid foundation for the construction and timely use of SRTF, and for the smooth progress of Haiyang Phase I."

Construction of unit 1 at Haiyang began in September 2009, while building of unit 2 started in June 2010.

Plans have been announced for the Haiyang site to eventually have six AP1000 reactors. In March 2009, the National Development and Reform Commission approved preliminary works for units 3 and 4 at the CPI site, also to be AP1000 units. Construction of those units is expected to start later in 2010 and two more are set to follow, although formal contracts with supplying partnership Westinghouse and Shaw for these have not yet been announced. Nevertheless, according to Energy Solutions, in addition to the six units already planned at Haiyang, CPI has reservations for a further two AP1000 units at the site.

In March, Energy Solutions was awarded a contract by China Guangdong Nuclear Power Holding Corporation (CGNPC) to supply waste management systems for two new CPR-1000 reactors being built at Yangjiang in Guangdong province. The contract is to design and supply the liquid waste processing system, together with solid waste systems, for the Yangjiang site.
