[sify.com, 10 October] The Indian cabinet has approved the Department of Atomic Energy's proposal for equipment procurement for two new 1400 MWe nuclear power plant projects at Kakrapar and Rawatbhata. Speaking after the meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, finance minister P Chidambaram described the procurement as a pre-requisite for the project to ensure the timely availability of equipment. Two 700 MWe indigenous pressurized heavy water reactors (PHWRs) are planned for each site.
