Kazakh HEU downblended
Some 33 kg of highly enriched uranium (HEU) has been removed from the Institute of Nuclear Physics in Almaty, Kazakhstan, and downblended into low enriched uranium (LEU), the US National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) has announced. The HEU - fresh fuel for the research reactor at the institute - was shipped to the Ulba Metallurgical Plant in Ust-Kamenogorsk, Kazakhstan, in an operation in August. All of the HEU has since been converted to LEU at the plant and will now be returned to the Institute of Nuclear Physics for future scientific work that will "support the safe, secure and peaceful use of nuclear energy." The NNSA's Global Threat Reduction Initiative and Kazakhstan are currently working to convert the institute's research reactor from the use of HEU to LEU fuel. The operation to remove and downblend the fuel was a combined effort between NNSA, the Kazakh government and the International Atomic Energy Agency.
