Providing enough extra electricity for 10% of France's cars to be electrically powered would require 6400 MWe more power generation capacity, according to Areva, which said it could supply the same with four new EPR reactors. Luc Oursel, the company's president and CEO, revealed the result to World Nuclear News at the UK Nuclear Industry Association's Energy Choices meeting in London yesterday. The figure of four new reactors covers the sheer increase in power demand and includes the changes to daily demand curves that would result from a road fleet employing significant numbers of electric cars. France already uses 58 reactors to provide around 78% of its electricity, and much for export.
