Nuclear and hydro cut Spanish emissions
[Unesa] Spanish electric utilities emitted 7.8% less carbon dioxide in 2006 than in 2005 according to Unesa, the Spanish electricity sector association. The four factors behind the reduction were the use of less coal- and oil-derivative-fired generation; more use of combined-cycle natural gas; more available hydropower, which recovered from 2005 but was still less than a typical year; and more output from the country's eight nuclear power reactors which suffered an unusual operating record in 2005. The total saving of carbon dioxide compare to 2005 was 8 million tonnes.
