Structure Vision said its NuPlant package simulates the cutting and packing of low- and intermediate-level wastes and provides reports and assessment on the impact of different choices. It developed the software for the nuclear sector in conjunction with Nuvia after working in the chemical industry.

The company said the product directly compares different costs and liabilities across the lifecycle of decommissioning projects, to the benefit of contractors. David Knight, director of software development, said it would allow project engineers to "be able to see the whole picture of their liabilities."

First, users can visualise the various stages in a complex dismantling process. Secondly it helps ensure compliance with regulatory requirements by producing bespoke reports for various packaging options. A spokesman for Nuvia noted its capability to help reduce both the volume of waste and the level of dose uptake.

Developed with the assistance of a £300,000 grant provided by the North West Regional Development Agency, the NuPlant software won the Rushlight Award for nuclear energy in 2008.
