Two public meetings are to be held with Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) officials and managers from Nuclear Fuel Services (NFS), following the NRC review of safety at the company's military nuclear fuel facility. Before the meetings, a one-hour poster information session will be conducted which will reveal information on safety reviews and events not released since 2004 due to security concerns. An August letter from NRC to NFS said that in a recent period there had been fewer NRC-identified violations at NFS's Erwin facility. However, because the company had not started any new commercial operations during the time, there had been fewer opportunities for the NRC to assess NFS's efforts to improve safety. In May it was revealed that a serious spill of high-enriched uranium solution had occurred at Erwin over a year before.
