Swedish Competition Authority eyes nuclear industry

[Nucleonics Week, 4 January] The Swedish government should sell part of its ownership or otherwise dilute utility Vattenfall's market influence to open the nuclear industry to more competition, the Swedish Competition Authority concluded in a report released on 28 December. Other recommendations on averting potential collusion among utilities include doing away with joint reactor ownership. Authority officials added that they are concerned that utilities are exchanging information beyond what is needed for safe and efficient plant operations. This includes information about production, outages, and fuel costs, which would allow manipulation of power supply and prices. The utilities deny that they are exchanging such information and say they are not colluding in any way.
