The glass is always greener...
This glowing green form is the latest addition to the National Museum of Scotland: a uranium glass representation of the two fast-breeder reactors at Dounreay which glows strongly under ultraviolet light.
This glowing green form is the latest addition to the National Museum of Scotland: a representation of the two fast-breeder reactors at Dounreay. The 2.5 kg hulk was crafted from uranium glass, which glows green under ultraviolet light, by Kate Williams in collaboration with John Lloyd. The duo has previously sculpted a replica of Homer Simpson's Springfield nuclear power plant. Alexander Hayward, National Museums Scotland’s keeper of science and technology commented on the piece's inclusion in a new gallery: "The research work at Dounreay into the production of nuclear energy is of historical interest as the first fast reactor in the world to generate electricity for a national grid was located there."
