Uranium exploration comes to Finland
[Associated Press, 19 January] The Finnish Trade and Industry Ministry granted a one-year uranium exploration permit to Namura Finland Oy. The permit, which covers an area of land near Kuusamo near the Russian border, includes restrictions because part of the region is a nature reserve. Namura, which was recently acquired by Cooper Minerals of Canada, would require a separate permit to start any mining activity. The ministry recently refused an application from Areva of France to explore for uranium in southern Finland and Arctic Lapland. Trade and Industry Minister Mauri Pekkarinen said that the application did not meet Finnish standards and failed to conform to Finnish mining legislation.
