Westinghouse and Hyundai to cooperate on AP1000
The agreement enables Hyundai E&C to have an opportunity to demonstrate its engineering, procurement and construction capabilities applied to Westinghouse's AP1000 plant, Hyundai E&C CEO Yoon Young-Joon said. "Also, Hyundai's presence in the green energy sector is expected to grow by jointly participating in the global conventional nuclear power plant projects led by Westinghouse," he added.
"Westinghouse's proven AP1000 technology leads the industry in safety and operational performance; we look forward to collaborating with Hyundai E&C, a global EPC leader, on future AP1000 plant projects to jointly help countries achieve their decarbonization and energy security objectives," said David Durham, President, Westinghouse Energy Systems.
The AP1000 is described by Westinghouse as a Generation III+ reactor with fully passive safety systems. Four AP1000 units are currently operating in China - two at Sanmen and two at Haiyang - and two units are also nearing completion at the Vogtle site in the USA. Two CAP1000 units - the Chinese version of the AP1000 - have been approved for the second phase of Sanmen and Haiyang, and AP1000 technology has also been selected or is under consideration for construction at sites in India, Poland, Ukraine and elsewhere.
The signing ceremony was held at Hyundai E&C headquarters in Seoul.
