Areva buys into wind turbine maker Multibrid
The world's only fully integrated nuclearcompany, Areva of France, has acquired a 51% stake in offshore windturbine designer and manufacturer Multibrid, which is owned by theGermany's Prokon Nord. The transaction values Multibrid, a manufacturerof 5 MWe offshore wind turbines, at Eur150 million ($208 million).Areva said that its stake in Multibrid increases its presence in theEuropean off-shore wind market, which it expects to increase from thecurrent 300 MWe to some 1400 MWe by 2011. As an exclusive supplier toProkon Nord, Multibrid will participate in such projects as Borkum West(30 MWe), Germany's first off-shore project, Borkum West 2 (400 MWe)and France's first off-shore wind farm, Cote d'Albatre (105 MWe). InMay 2007, Areva and Suzlon Windenergie signed a binding agreement overanother German wind power company, Repower. Areva took a 30% stake inRepower and became the preferred supplier of Suzlon in the field ofelectricity transmission and distribution.
