Areva finalises Bakouma
[Reuters, 2 August] Production at the Bakouma mine in the Central African Republic (CAR) should start in 2010, after the end of difficult negotiations over the uranium deposit. The CAR government had been unhappy about Areva gaining the mining concession with its purchase of UraMin about a year ago. A $43 million deal to realise the mining venture was signed on 1 August by Areva CEO Anne Lauvergeon and CAR President Francois Bozize which would see the country gain 12% of production revenues as well as 1000 new jobs and new health and electricity infrastructure. Lauvergeon said it was a "win-win" deal and that production would peak at around 1200 tonnes of uranium per year in 2012-13.
