Armed robbery at Pelindaba

An attack on South Africa's Pelindaba nuclearresearch site has resulted in a worker being shot. Anton Gerber, anoperations officer in the Emergency Services department, reportedlytackled armed men who entered the emergency control room of the site on7 November. He was rushed to hospital and is in a stable condition.Site operator Necsa, South Africa's state nuclear research company, described the event as an armed robbery in a short statement. A pilot nuclear fuel plantis under development at Pelindaba to provide fuel for the demonstrationpebble-bed modular reactor and the Safari-1 research reactor has operated there since 1965.
