Chu confirmed as US Energy Secretary

Wednesday, 21 January 2009

Hours after Barack Obama was sworn in as President of the USA, the Senate voted to confirm Steven Chu as the new US Energy Secretary. Chu was selected by Obama on 15 December to be the next secretary of the Department of Energy (DoE). On 13 January, Chu sat before the US Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources to pledge his willingness to take up the job. He told the committee that he was "supportive of the fact that the nuclear industry is, should have to be, a part of our energy mix in this century." He also said that Obama's "aggressive" plan to meet the challenge of a "push towards energy independence" was achievable and would involve "a continued commitment to nuclear power and a long-term plan for waste management and disposal." Nobel laureate physicist Chu, formerly director of Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, takes over from Sam Bodman, who served as energy secretary since December 2004.
