JNFL, Areva extend recycling partnership

Tuesday, 25 September 2007
[Areva, JNFL, 24 September] Heads of Areva and Japan Nuclear Fuel Ltd (JNFL) have signed an agreement extending their cooperation in nuclear fuel recycling. The Global Partnership Agreement, signed by Areva CEO Anne Lauvergeon and JNFL president Isami Kojima, will firstly see the companies work to strengthen the "industrial effectiveness" of the La Hague and Rokkasho plants, and secondly make joint efforts to promote international recycling activities such as the Global Nuclear Energy Partnership (GNEP). The companies are already involved in conceptual design studies for the Consolidated Fuel Treatment Centre (CFTC), an international treatment facility to be built under the GNEP framework. The companies' long-term relationship dates back to 1987 when JNFL chose the La Hague treatment plant in France as the design basis for its Rokkasho reprocessing plant. Under the new agreement, the two companies will create a joint team dedicated to optimizing common technical issues at the sister plants.
