Jordan and China sign nuclear agreements
[Petra, 25 November] Two nuclear agreements - one on the purchase of a sub-critical assembly and the other implementing an earlier draft cooperation agreement - have been signed by Jordan and China. Under the first agreement, China will supply Jordan with a sub-critical system and work to establish a training laboratory at the Jordanian University of Science and Technology, seen as essential for training nuclear engineers and academics. The second agreement is the executive protocol for the nuclear cooperation agreement signed by the two countries in August, covering mining, uranium enrichment, training and research, the construction of a research reactor and consultations on nuclear power plant construction. Jordan is poor in both energy and water resources, but has uranium deposits, and is working towards introducing nuclear energy for power and desalination. The country is currently investigating the feasibility of mining its uranium, and recently signed an agreement on joint exploration and mining activities with French company Areva. It has also signed nuclear cooperation agreements with the USA, France and UK.
