Marathon end to Cuban nuclear meeting
Friday, 30 November 2007
[Prensa Latina, 28 November] Delegates from 12 countries attended a seminar on 28-30 November in Havana, Cuba, on public information on the peaceful use of nuclear energy. The meeting was organised by the World Council of Nuclear Workers (WONUC). It included discussions and presentations on energy and the environment, public information, preservation of knowledge, technical cooperation and the role of WONUC. The meeting concluded with the 12th Nuclear MaxiMarathon. More than 200 runners (about 100 from overseas and 100 from Cuba) ran a course covering 83 km, divided into eight sections of about 10 km each. Teams of some 20 runners ran the route in relay, each team taking two or three stages at a rate of about one stage every eight hours. Runners were escorted by a front vehicle, an ambulance, the accompanying doctor's car, and a vehicle to pick up exhausted runners. The event was open to both experienced runners and those not so fit. However, all participants were required to produce a recent medical certificate before being allowed to take part. This was the first time the MaxiMarathon was held outside of Europe.
