Nuclear a 'no brainer' for Britain

Monday, 28 April 2008

The UK business and enterprise minister, John Hutton, made one of his most pro-nuclear speeches yet when he addressed the Nuclear New Build 2008 conference in London today. He said the need for nuclear is a "no brainer" for the government and that in replacing retiring nuclear plants, "like-for-like is far too timid". There is a "strong political consensus on nuclear new build," according to Hutton, but he would not "turn the clock back" to former times of central planning. The private sector and the market will decide the appropriate level of market share for each generation technology, but it is essential for the government to "get carbon pricing and energy taxation right."
