Power uprate approved for Calvert Cliffs

Thursday, 30 July 2009

The US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) has approved an uprate of 1.4% of both Units 1 and 2 at Constellation's Calvert Cliff nuclear power plant in Maryland. The regulator determined that Constellation could safely increase the units' power output primarily through more accurate means of measuring feedwater flow. The uprate will increase Unit 1's generating capacity from some 895 MWe to 905 MWe and Unit 2's capacity from around 885 MWe to 895 MWe. Constellation plans to implement the uprate of unit 2 by the end of 2009 and that of Unit 1 during the summer of 2010. The company submitted its application for the uprate to the NRC in August 2008. Calvert Cliffs 1 and 2 - both pressurised water reactors (PWRs) - began operating in 1975 and 1977, respectively.
