Reform bill approved by Russian Duma

[Nuclear.Ru, 17 and 19 January] The lower house of the Russian parliament (the State Duma) voted 372-43 on 17 January to approve a bill that would clear the way for the formation of a state-owned holding company for all enterprises involved in the civilian nuclear sector, to be known as Atomprom. In 2006, President Vladimir Putin approved a reorganisation of the country's nuclear industry in order to boost nuclear energy production and strengthen Russia's presence in the global nuclear market. The Duma approved the third reading of the draft law on 19 January by 351-57. It also approved an amendment under which the government should inform the Duma every six months about the progress in reforming the nuclear industry. The legislation can now be signed into law by Putin.
