Susquehanna 1 named largest BWR
Recently completed equipment and system upgrades have made PPL Corporation's Susquehanna 1 the largest boiling water reactor (BWR) in the USA in terms of both thermal and electrical output, PPL has proudly announced. Upgrades to the Pennsylvania plant have brought its thermal capacity to 3952 MWt and its electrical capacity to about 1300 MWe. A spokesman from the plant told World Nuclear News that in the summer, when river water used to cool the plant is warmer, the electrical ouput of unit 1 is about 1280 MWe, whilst in winter it is over 1300 MWe. Equipment upgrades completed during a recent refueling outage included the installation of a new integrated digital control system for plant equipment and the replacement of turbines that power pumps that provide water to the reactor vessel. The work is part of an ongoing four-year project to increase the Susquehanna plant's total output. The project is expected to conclude in 2011 with the completion of further upgrades that will bring the site's second unit to similar thermal and electrical capacities to unit 1.
