Waters rise beneath Tricastin

Tuesday, 16 December 2008

Heavy rain led to a rapid rise in local river levels at France's Tricastin site and caused companies operating there to instigate emergency plans in the early hours of 15 December. Waters from the Gaffière river flooded some buildings owned by the Socatri and BCOT organizations, which handle contaminated parts from the Eurodif uranium enrichment plant and the Tricastin power plant respectively. Local farmers also had to take emergency action. The French nuclear safety regulator, ASN, said it was informed immediately and that any rating for the event on the International Nuclear Event Scale had yet to be decided. The site and the Gaffière were in the news in July after a 30 cubic metres of uranium-bearing solution spilled from a Socatri facility.
